Sealing Concrete Bench-Tops: The Right Protection for Exceptional Surfaces
Concrete bench-tops make a powerful design statement – and with advanced materials like GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) and ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite), you’re starting with surfaces engineered to perform. But even the best concrete needs the right sealer. Sealing is what locks in that performance, protects the finish, and ensures your bench-top looks and behaves at its best for years to come.
Why Sealing Matters – Even for GFRC and ECC
GFRC and ECC are low-porosity, high-performance materials, but “low porosity” isn’t the same as sealed. Without proper protection, even these advanced composites are vulnerable to:
Staining: Oils, wine, coffee, and everyday kitchen spills can penetrate an unsealed surface over time. A sealer creates a barrier that keeps contaminants on the surface, not in it.
Moisture ingress: Repeated moisture exposure can degrade surface quality over time. Sealing locks out water before it becomes a problem.
Surface wear: A quality sealer adds a protective film that resists scratching, dulling, and general wear – keeping the surface looking intentional, not tired.
The Right Type of Sealer: Why Film-Forming Wins
For concrete bench-tops, microscopic film-forming sealers are the professional standard. These products bond directly to the surface, building a protective layer that guards against staining, moisture, and abrasion while enhancing the concrete’s natural depth and colour.
What about penetrating sealers? Penetrating sealers absorb into concrete and offer basic water resistance – they have their place on driveways and outdoor slabs. But for decorative, high-use bench-tops, they simply don’t deliver. They offer no meaningful protection against staining or wear, and they do nothing for the finish. In the bench-top industry, penetrating sealers aren’t the answer.

Preparing Your Surface for Sealing
Good sealing starts before the sealer goes on. Once your concrete has been cast, cured, demoulded, sanded, and processed, use Clean & Etch to prepare the surface. This step opens the concrete’s pores, allowing the sealer to bond more deeply and perform at its full potential.
The surface must be completely dry before sealing – any residual moisture will interfere with adhesion and sealer performance. Once dry, follow the product-specific mixing and application instructions for your chosen sealer.
