Admixtures are the ingredients that separate a good concrete mix from a great one. Used in GFRC, ECC, and architectural concrete applications, concrete admixtures modify the behaviour of your mix — improving workability, reducing water demand, controlling set time, and strengthening the final result without adding bulk or compromising finish quality.
Domcrete stocks a carefully selected range of admixtures for concrete from Alpha and Buddy Rhodes, two of the most trusted names in engineered cementitious formulation. Whether you need a plasticiser (water reducer) to improve flow, a pozzolan to increase density and durability, silica fume for compressive strength, or curing polymers, you’ll find the right product here. All formulas are compatible with Domcrete’s GFRC premix range and designed for professional use across Australia and New Zealand.
The terms are often used interchangeably, and functionally they do the same job. They reduce the amount of water needed to achieve your target workability, which lowers the water-to-cement ratio and increases strength. The Alpha WR135 is a liquid plasticiser, while the Alpha Water Reducer is a powder-based option. The choice between them often comes down to the mix method and personal preference. Both are compatible with GFRC, SCC, and ECC mixes. If you are unsure which suits your application, contact our team for advice.
Silica fume, also known as microsilica, is a highly reactive pozzolan that fills the microscopic voids between cement particles, creating a denser, less permeable matrix. When used as an admixture in concrete, it dramatically increases compressive strength, reduces permeability, and improves surface quality. In GFRC and ECC applications, it is valued for producing a tighter, smoother surface finish.
Both. While scratch mix fabricators rely on admixtures most heavily because they are building a formula from raw components, many fabricators also add a water reducer or plasticiser to a premix to fine-tune workability for their specific casting method or ambient conditions. Our premix range is engineered to work seamlessly with the Alpha WR135 and Water Reducer Powder. The appropriate dosage rates are noted on each product page.
The right admixture depends on your mix type (GFRC, ECC, or SCC), your casting method (spray-up, hand-pack, trowel, or pour), and the properties you need to optimise.
As a starting point, use a water reducer or plasticiser in almost every mix for improved flow and strength. Add silica fume if you are batching from scratch and want a denser matrix or use one of the Alpha Premix bags to take the guess work out.
