Mixed Element, QLD
At Corso House, the kitchen island becomes a sculptural focal point within the space. Fabricated by Mixed Element, the fluted concrete island was produced using GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) supplied by Domcrete. The vertical fluting creates a rhythmic texture that interacts with light throughout the day, giving the island a sense of movement while maintaining the solid, grounded presence that concrete brings to an interior. Achieving this level of detail in concrete requires careful mould design and precise casting, as the fluted geometry must remain consistent across the entire piece.
The island was fabricated at approximately 25mm thickness, highlighting the advantages of GFRC for architectural concrete applications. Traditional concrete relies on bulk for strength, whereas GFRC uses alkali-resistant glass fibres to provide tensile strength in much thinner sections. This allows fabricators like Mixed Element to produce detailed, lightweight elements while maintaining structural integrity and surface quality. The result is a refined concrete island that demonstrates both the technical capability of modern GFRC and the craftsmanship behind architectural concrete fabrication.
